Why I became an Independent Professional

I am often asked why I traded my engineering career for being an independent professional.

When I decided to become an independent professional, I knew that I was taking a risk. I spent a lot of time wrestling with internal insecurity. Leaving a steady job with a predictable income can be scary, but I was ready for a change. I wanted more control over my life and work, and being an independent professional was the best way to achieve that.

One of the biggest benefits of being an independent professional is the freedom it provides, and freedom is one of my core values. I can choose my clients and projects, and set my own schedule, which allows me to spend more time with my family. While there are still availability commitments and meetings, I have more power in scheduling, and it feels different.

As an independent professional, I work with multiple clients per year, taking on multiple projects and quickly onboarding to understand the matter. Learning new things is one of my strengths, and I enjoy diving deep into new waters. Working on a project for a shorter term allows me to keep my skills sharp, accelerate learning, and avoid boredom.

Another benefit is the opportunity to learn more about the business side of things and gain knowledge about brand marketing, outreach, client relations, and finances. I was always interested in business but hesitant to pursue it. Working independently allows me to gain confidence and necessary knowledge.

Of course, being an independent professional isn't always easy. It takes hard work, dedication, and self-discipline to succeed. There are times when I have to work long hours or take on projects outside of my comfort zone, but these challenges are what make the job rewarding.

Although it is still early to make conclusions, I believe that becoming an independent professional has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. It has given me the freedom to live life on my own terms and pursue my dreams. If you're considering making the leap, I encourage you to take the risk. It may be scary at first, but the rewards are well worth it.
